Lake Taupo | The impressive Lake Taupo

Lake Taupo is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in New Zealand. At 616 square kilometres, it is also the largest lake in the country. What makes Lake Taupo special is that it is a flooded crater, making the water extremely clear. Lake Taupo is known for its stunning views with Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe and the snow-capped Mount Ruapehu in the background.

Nestled on the shores of the expansive Lake Taupo, the city of Taupo is a picturesque gem on New Zealand's North Island. Famed for its stunning natural surroundings and outdoor recreational opportunities, Taupo offers a blend of serene lakeside beauty and vibrant urban life. From the iconic Huka Falls and the geothermal marvels of Craters of the Moon, to the nearby Tongariro National Park with its world-renowned hikes, the city serves as a gateway to a plethora of adventures. Beyond nature, Taupo boasts a lively arts scene, charming boutique shops, and a diverse culinary landscape, making it a well-rounded destination that caters to both relaxation seekers and thrill enthusiasts.

Lake Taupo

The lake was created by a volcanic eruption in 186 AD. It was so powerful that the entire North Island was covered in ash. The ash was even spewed all over the world. Books can be found from China in which they wrote about a black sky. The Romans spoke of a "blood-red" sky.

It is almost impossible to imagine that something so beautiful came from something so violent. But the evidence is everywhere. The beaches are composed of pumice stone that is very light. The volcano that once erupted is now a 'dormant' volcano, but volcanologists are keeping a close eye on Taupo volcano.

TIP ♥ - stat Taupo is one of the most fun cities in New Zealand. There is an awful lot to do and the city has a beautiful lakeside location.

Lake Taupo

Of course, the water in Lake Taupo did not just come from nowhere. It comes from several rivers nearby. The lake is therefore full of fish, especially trout. Lake Taupo is therefore popular among anglers. Apart from fishing, you can also swim here.

The best place to swim is in Acacia Bay. You'll find a quiet beach here and also the Waipahihi hot springs. Besides swimming, activities here include water-skiing, surfing, paragliding and raft trips towards Tongariro and Rangtaiki. Skydiving over Lake Taupo, by the way, is one of the most beautiful locations for skydiving.

Legend has it.

According to the local Tuwharetoa people, the shape of the lake was created by their ancestor Ngatoroirangi. He was a traveller who discovered much of New Zealand. The legend is that Ngatoroirangi threw a tree from the top of Mount Tauhara (near Taupo).

At the spot where the tree came down, groundwater rose and formed the lake. The lake's full name is therefore Taupo-Nui-A-Tia. This means something like 'The Great Shoulder Mat of Tia' or 'Good Night's Rest of Tia'. This in turn refers to an explorer of the Arawa people who slept by the lake.
